Asphalt Demo and Repave at a Pinellas Park Food Pantry
Project overview
This food pantry in Pinellas Park has two asphalt driveways running from the public sidewalk back to its buildings. One leads to the covered drop-off at the pantry, and the other runs back to the youth building behind it.
Both had worn out. The surface was alligator-cracked from end to end, the edges were breaking into the grass, and the asphalt had lifted and crumbled where it met the sidewalk. Even the painted arrow on the second drive had cracked apart. Patching or sealcoating wouldn’t have held, so both drives came out and went back in new.
When cracking runs the full length of a driveway, patching only covers the problem for a season. The fix is taking it out and starting over.
How the job went
- DemoThe old asphalt came out on both driveways, so none of the failed surface stayed under the new one.
- PaveNew asphalt went down along each drive, from the sidewalk back to the buildings, with straight edges against the grass.
- CompactEach drive was rolled smooth and finished flush with the concrete sidewalk, with no lip to trip on or catch a cart wheel.
What this project demonstrates
A driveway that people walk on every day needs to be even. At a food pantry that means volunteers carrying boxes, families with carts, and delivery drops, all crossing the same stretch of pavement. Cracked, heaving asphalt is a trip hazard for every one of them.
Where asphalt meets a sidewalk, a flush tie-in matters as much as the new surface.
Short drives like these don’t take a long shutdown, and a full demo and repave puts an end to patching season after season.
